Our History
In February 1848, Dr. Samuel Fisk Green relocated to Manipay, the hub of American Mission medical work, where he established the first dispensary and translated and wrote medical books in Tamil.
From 1873 to 1893, a medical missionary from America taught medical classes and managed the hospital.
Dr. Jameson, whose contributions were crucial to the development and expansion of the hospital, worked between 1923 and 1928 to erect buildings, provide equipment, and elevate the professional standards of the staff, shaping what is now the modern Green Memorial Hospital (GMH).
The hospital experienced disrepair due to the civil war in 2004 but has since been revived with charitable assistance from the Friends of Manipay Hospital trustees. Currently, the hospital operates under the guardianship of the Jaffna Diocese of CSI, incorporating the GMH Governing Council.
